The Role of Routine in Maintaining Independence

One thing I've noticed after working with older adults for many years is that independence isn't just about being physically able to do something.
It's also about continuing to do the things that give each day a sense of purpose.
Making coffee in the morning.
Taking a walk after breakfast.
Reading before bed.
Meeting a friend every Thursday.
Watering the garden.
None of these things seem extraordinary. But together, they become part of the rhythm of everyday life.
When one of those routines starts to disappear, it's often easy to dismiss.
"I'll walk tomorrow."
"I haven't felt like reading lately."
"I'll call them next week."
Life happens, and routines naturally change. But over time, those small changes can make us feel less active, less connected, and sometimes less like ourselves.
Research has shown that having regular routines supports both physical and emotional well-being as we age. But honestly, you don't need research to see it.
You see it in the person who still enjoys their morning walk.
The neighbor who's always working in the garden.
The friend who never misses their weekly coffee date.
Those routines aren't just habits.
They're part of who we are.
One of the things I've learned as a physical therapist is that people rarely need someone to take over.
More often, they need someone who notices, encourages, and supports them in continuing the life they already value.
That's one of the reasons I created AmiCalls.
Our conversations aren't about telling people what to do or pushing them toward new goals.
They're about supporting the goals, routines, and relationships that already matter to them—whether that's reading another chapter, getting outside for a walk, staying connected with family, or continuing a favorite hobby.
Sometimes the most meaningful support isn't changing someone's life. It's simply showing up consistently so they can continue living the life they value.
Thanks for spending a few minutes with me today.
If this resonated with you, or if you've been thinking about how to better support someone you care about, I'd love to talk.
I offer a free introductory call where we can get to know each other, answer your questions, and see whether AmiCalls feels like the right fit.
