Looking Beyond Healthcare... and Strawberry Cake

Dear Friends,

I came across an article this week about proposed changes to Medicare Advantage reimbursement, and it got me thinking.

Oddly enough, it reminded me of strawberry cake.

Not because the two have anything in common on the surface, but because sometimes the things that matter most aren't what we first notice.

When we think about healthcare, it's easy to focus on the big things.

Doctor's appointments.

Medications.

Insurance.

Hospital visits.

Those things are incredibly important.

But over the years, both as a physical therapist and through the conversations I've had with so many people, I've realized that living well is often found somewhere else.

Sometimes it's in the excitement of baking a favorite strawberry cake for the grandchildren.

Sometimes it's looking forward to a weekly lunch with a friend.

A morning walk.

Reading a chapter before bed.

Calling a daughter every Sunday evening.

These moments may seem ordinary, but they're often the routines and relationships that give life its rhythm.

They're the reasons people get out of bed in the morning.

When I read articles about healthcare, I can't help but think about those moments.

Because while healthcare is incredibly important, it can't be the only thing we invest in.

Supporting someone isn't always about another appointment or another medical service.

Sometimes it's about supporting the goals, routines, and relationships that already matter to them, so they can continue living the life they value.

Maybe that's baking a strawberry cake.

Maybe it's tending a garden.

Maybe it's finishing a book they've been reading for weeks.

Whatever it is, those moments deserve our attention too.

That's the idea behind AmiCalls.

Not to replace healthcare.

Not to replace family.

But to become another consistent part of someone's support system through meaningful conversations, encouragement, and genuine connection.

I believe there's room for both excellent healthcare and creative ways to support people in everyday life.

In fact, I think we'll need both.

Thank you for spending a few minutes with me today.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

What's your version of "strawberry cake"?

What's one routine, hobby, or tradition that makes life feel like your life?

With gratitude,

Amie 🌱
